How Can I Sign Up For the Informed Delivery Service?
Informed Delivery is a USPS service that allows you to digitally preview actual photographic images of letter-sized mail and packages that are scheduled to arrive at your home or PO box through email notifications and an online dashboard. The service is free for residential customers and can be accessed via the website or mobile apps. For business mailers, Informed Delivery offers the opportunity to create synchronized digital and direct mail marketing campaigns.
When signing up for Informed Delivery service, you will need to verify your identity either through a one-time link sent to your mobile device or by answering questions that only you should know the answer to. However, Krebs on Security notes that many of these questions could be guessed by a criminal accessing public databases and social media.
After you have verified your identity, you will receive an email each day with an image of the mail and/or package that is scheduled for delivery to your home or PO box. The dashboard will display mail images for up to a week and you can also view tracking information for inbound packages.
While the Informed Delivery service can be useful for people who often travel or who are awaiting important pieces of mail, it should be noted that the notifications only show the exterior of the envelope and package, not the contents within. For this reason, it may not be as useful for someone who wants to keep their letters private.
