USPS Informed Delivery
The USPS Informed Delivery program is a free service that allows consumers to digitally preview their mail and manage packages scheduled to arrive soon via email notifications, an online dashboard, and a mobile app. It is also possible for users to interact with digital content provided by business mailers directly from the Informed Delivery platform.
This is all made possible by automated equipment that takes black-and-white pictures of the fronts of letter-size pieces as they pass through sorting machines. These images are then emailed to customers for them to review before they receive their actual mail. Informed Delivery was launched in 2014 and expanded to more Zip Code areas in 2017.
Informed Delivery isn’t a substitute for checking your physical mailbox on a regular basis. While it can provide a sneak peak at the contents of your mail, only a small portion of each piece is displayed in the previews. Mail images remain visible for seven days, and information about any incoming packages will be displayed on the Informed Delivery dashboard for fifteen days.
The only downside to USPS Informed Delivery is that the system can be susceptible to security breaches, so it is important to be wary of any emails you receive asking for your personal or account details. The program uses knowledge-based authentication to verify a customer’s identity during signup. This verification process includes asking a series of multiple-choice questions only the subscriber could know the answer to.
